Discover Burghausen

Only a few kilometres from Altötting is the town of Burghausen, located directly on the Salzach River, which is also the border to Austria. The name says it all: “Burg” means castle, and here the world’s longest castle towers over the charming old town and the picturesque Wöhrsee lake. Built in the Middle Ages and inhabited by various princes and dukes over the centuries, the castle is still home to many locals today. At a proud 1,051 metres, the castle is the high point of any holiday in Burghausen and one of the most exciting attractions in the Inn-Salzach region! The seemingly endless battlements and towers that line the narrow ridge are truly fascinating.

Below it lies the colourful, listed old town of Burghausen. Explore the beauty of the town or get a change of perspective with a trip on the “Plätte”, the former salt barges, on the glittering Salzach or the nearby viewpoints on the Austrian side of the river. If you want something a bit more demanding, we recommend the numerous cycling routes along the Salzach and in the surrounding area. Afterwards, a refreshing drink in Burghausen’s beer gardens and restaurants is the perfect way to enjoy those special holiday moments!
